Manchester United reportedly had a summer approach for Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero turned down.

Erik ten Hag’s team added two new centre-backs to their squad over the summer with deals completed for Leny Yoro, of Lille, and Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

However, it has been revealed the Red Devils made an ambitious approach to sign Spurs central defender Romero, though were informed the Argentine was not for sale.

Romero has established himself as one of the leading defenders in the Premier League in North London despite occasional disciplinary issues and formed part of the Argentina team that won the World Cup in 2022 and Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

The 26-year-old plays alongside Lisandro Martinez for the national team and TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul has claimed Manchester United were keen to reunite the pair at club level.

United were reportedly one of three teams to enquire about Romero, alongside Paris Saint-Germain – who instead signed Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt – and Real Madrid.

Spurs emphatically dismissed all enquiries for the vice-captain and refused to even place a valuation on the defender, who is viewed as indispensable to Ange Postecoglou’s plans.

Real Madrid could return for Romero next summer, having failed to sign a central defender in the most recent window. The Spanish and European champions were interested in a deal to sign Yoro, but missed out to Manchester United.
