Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick as manager for the remainder of the season on Tuesday.

Carrick will have to work with the squad he has inherited, with the club having no plans to make new signings this winter, per journalist Mark Ogden

The Red Devils are aware of the need to strengthen in midfield, but none of their top targets are available this month.

A deal for Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson or Carlos Baleba is unlikely to materialise, as Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion are not interested in selling.

United’s hierarchy do not want to make short-term additions and are prepared to wait until the summer.

Outgoings are also unlikely during the winter transfer window, as the club intends to keep Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo at Old Trafford.

Carrick faces a difficult task to revive the club’s fortunes. They have won just once in their previous seven matches in all competitions and are seventh in the league standings.

His first game will be against title contenders Manchester City, who beat them 3-0 in the reverse fixture of the season.

Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo will be available for selection following the elimination of Cameroon and Ivory Coast from the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, with Morocco still alive in the tournament, Noussair Mazraoui remains unavailable.
