Manchester United identify target for problem position

Manchester United are interested in signing Juventus defender Juan Cabal to fill the club’s problem position at left-back.

Erik ten Hag is without a recognised option at left-back as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia continue to struggle with injuries. Shaw made just 12 league appearances in 2023/24, while Malacia failed to make a single appearance during the campaign.

The ongoing problems surrounding the pair’s fitness has led to United assessing transfer targets and Cabal features on their radar.

Spanish outlet El Nacional are reporting that Ten Hag has ‘ordered’ Manchester United to make a bid for Cabal, who is valued at around £25.4m. The Colombian has made an instant impression since signing for Juventus from Serie A rivals Hellas Verona in the summer.

The 23-year-old ranks in the 99th percentile of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for aerial duels won per game across the last 12 months, while he is in the top six percent of all full-backs for clearances and interceptions per 90.

Cabal’s strong form to start the season has seen the 6ft 1in defender win 100% of his duels in the air (7/7) in the opening fixtures of the Serie A campaign.
