Manchester United are currently focusing their efforts on West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes and talks through his agent Jorge Mendes are advancing, according to The Athletic.
Manager Michael Carrick wants two players in the middle of the park, and the ‘unbelievably excellent‘ 21-year-old Portuguese has been a top target for weeks.
Agreeing on personal terms with Fernandes is not anticipated to be an issue for the Red Devils.
The West Ham star is also on the radar of Real Madrid and Arsenal, but United are currently the favourites due to their relationship with Mendes.
The super agent has an excellent working relationship with the Red Devils, and Fernandes could be on his way to the Theatre of Dreams.
Their interest is expected to be formalised with an opening bid. However, the club are unwilling to meet West Ham’s £80 million asking price.
They have also explored the parameters of a deal for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. He could be available for £60m this summer, which is a more appealing fee.
While Fernandes is open to joining Man United, the Hammers have to reduce their asking price as it will be tricky to see any of his suitors meet their demands.
The youngster has what it takes to help improve the Red Devils’ midfield.
Signing him and other top players could boost their chances of challenging for the Premier League title next season.
