Latest summer signing among absentees as Manchester derby looms

Manchester United picked up their first league win of the season on Sunday evening, but there was mixed news on the fitness front for Michael Carrick.

Carlos Baleba and Mason Mount were both in attendance at Old Trafford as United put five past Ipswich, but neither was named to the matchday squad. Amad Diallo and Matthijs de Ligt, meanwhile, were nowhere to be seen.

Now, with a first Manchester derby of the season looming large in early September, Carrick will hope to welcome his stars back sooner rather than later.

Carlos Baleba is the latest big-money signing to arrive at Old Trafford, joining from Brighton in a £70m deal, but he arrives with an ankle injury.

He picked up a ligament injury while in pre-season training with Brighton which will delay his Man United debut.

Speaking ahead of the Ipswich match, Carrick said he is a matter of weeks away from being ready to play competitive football.

“He’s got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, maybe three weeks,” he said last week. “We’ll see but we knew that before, so it’s no major issue but it’ll be great to have him back when we can.”

Such a timeline could see him ready to return in the Manchester derby.

Mason Mount has struggled with injuries throughout his United career and is continuing to do so.

He picked up a foot injury described by Carrick as a knock in a pre-season friendly with Paris Saint-Germain which has now kept him sidelined for three weeks.

Carrick suggested he might be ready to face Ipswich, but he played no part and watched on from the stands. Previewing that match, though, he made clear Mount was back in first-team training, suggesting a comeback is imminent.

Carrick said: “Mase (Mount) is back around the group, which was great. Trained this week, so that’s a big positive for us.”

Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo was a surprise absentee from the United team sheet to face Hull in the first week of the Premier League season, and it was later revealed he had suffered a muscle injury in training.

He was nowhere to be seen against Ipswich, either, with Carrick only offering vague updates as to when he might return.

Speaking ahead of the match, Carrick said: “Amad won’t be involved this week. He’ll be out for a little bit longer.”

Matthijs de Ligt has not played a game of competitive football since November, when he suffered a lower back injury which eventually required surgery.

He is now back in first-team training, though, as he looks to build up to full match fitness.

Carrick has made clear he will be patient with the player in a bid to prevent further injury.

“Matt [De Ligt]’s obviously been out for a long period of time, but he’s training and great to have him back,” Carrick said ahead of visiting Hull. “He’s in good shape and moving in a good direction. So that’s really a good bonus for us, at this stage to have him back.”

Tom Heaton has not appeared for United since picking up a knock in the friendly against PSG.

It is not clear how severe his injury is, or when he might return to the side for United.

Manuel Ugarte

Manuel Ugarte is undergoing rehabilitation afer he had surgery on a knee ligament tear sustained at World Cup.

He is expected to be sidelined for most of the season.
