Carrick’s first defeat as interim United boss may have come with an extra blow
Manchester United welcomed back several players midweek but are now faced with a fresh injury concern following Wednesday’s loss to Newcastle.
Results elsewhere saw the Red Devils remain third in the Premier League despite defeat against the 10-man Magpies, a result which ended Michael Carrick’s impressive unbeaten start as interim boss.
Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire both recovered from fitness issues that led to their removal during the previous match, and Maguire completed 90 minutes at St James’ Park while Shaw’s withdrawal just after the hour mark that evening was not thought to be injury-related.
However, United’s backline did appear to take another hit that Carrick could do without given a crunch clash against Aston Villa is just around the corner.
Here’s all the latest Manchester United injury news and potential return dates...
Last Wednesday marked Noussair Mazraoui’s first start since December, when he jetted off for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mazraoui began the game at right-back, then switched over to the opposite flank when Shaw was replaced by Diogo Dalot.
However, the Moroccan full-back failed to make it to full-time.

Having picked up an undisclosed knock in the closing stages, Mazraoui limped off to be replaced by Tyrell Malacia - who ultimately found himself at fault for late Newcastle’s winner - in the 85th-minute.
Carrick provided no update on the player’s condition on Wednesday, but Mazraoui was also seen limping as he left St James’ Park.
Thankfully for United, there is a decent break between the Newcastle game and their next outing, at home to Champions League rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.
Still, Mazraoui will no doubt be assessed to determine the extend of any injury he might have suffered, with an update expected this week.

Despite Carrick saying Mason Mount was “getting closer” to a return last week, the midfielder is still yet to feature for United since making a brief cameo appearance in January’s Manchester derby.
Carrick revealed Mount had picked up an injury in training after that game, but he has since returned to first-team training and may be targeting a comeback against Villa.
“He’s on the grass and looking at being around it pretty soon,” Carrick said before United’s win over Crystal Palace.
“We’re just having to be patient, so we’re looking after him and making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season.”

Similarly, Lisandro Martinez is continuing to recover from a calf injury sustained ahead of last month’s defeat against Everton.
He, like Mount, failed to make the matchday squad for the Newcastle game.
Carrick predicted initially that the Argentine would miss one or two weeks.
Before the trip to St James’ Park last week, the United boss was asked if he had a positive update on Martinez’s conditions and replied: “Not particularly, really, no. He won’t be with us [against Newcastle].”

Another defender, Matthijs de Ligt, has been absent since November, when he sustained a lower back injury at Selhurst Park.
As of the Newcastle game, he was yet to return to training and does not seem particularly close to doing so.
“It’s part of football unfortunately, so we’ll get him back when we can,” Carrick explained in his latest update.
“It's just the nature of the issue really. It’s a difficult one to pin down a timeline. He’s definitely improving, so we're just working towards that really.
“I can’t give you more at this stage.”
Potential return date: Unknown
Just as he was finding form, Patrick Dorgu suffered a torn hamstring injury in United’s defeat of Arsenal.
It was later reported that the Dutchman would be out for around ten weeks.

Carrick has provided no further update on the Dane recently, but Denmark national team head coach Brian Riemer suggested Dorgu may be available for selection in the March international break, when his country will be aiming to qualify for the World Cup.
“I know that Patrick has a dream to be ready,” he said in late February.
"I will only help him keep that dream alive as long as the opportunity exists."
