Forward’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain after clause expiry

Manchester United have issued their stance on Marcus Rashford’s future.

The England forward is currently in transfer limbo, with Barcelona not taking up their buy option in the loan deal they struck with the Red Devils last summer.

Rashford spent the term at the Nou Camp, where he played 49 games and scored 14 goals, but the La Liga outfit did not want to pay the €30million price that had been set in order to turn his move permanent.

Instead, the Culers bought Anthony Gordon for €80m from Newcastle, and they are about to add Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund for a reported €30 million as well as Hansi Flick bolsters his forward line.

As such, it leaves Rashford in no-man’s land, having been part of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ last summer.

The now-28 year old reportedly has suitors, but as the transfer window drags on, he remains no closer to an Old Trafford exit.

Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that United could in fact welcome their academy product back into the fold, with Michael Carrick now at the helm on a permanent basis, having taken over the reins from Amorim back in January on an initial caretakership.

Transfer guru Romano says that Carrick wants to work with Rashford, who will be integrated back into the United squad for their pre-season campaign, which begins today against Wrexham in Helskinki, Finland.

Rashford is not part of the travelling cohort to Scandinavia as he completes his World Cup campaign with England, who take on France in the third-place play-off this evening in Miami, Florida.

David Ornstein had previously reported that there was a £40m exit clause that all clubs - barring Liverpool and Manchester City - could trigger to purchase Rashford this summer, but that expired earlier this week.
