Manchester United are keen on signing Geovany Quenda from Sporting Lisbon, dubbed “one of the most promising players of his generation”.

According to Fichajes, United have shown “serious interest” in the 17-year-old attacker, whose explosive start to the season has turned heads across Europe.

Despite his tender years, Quenda is already a first-team regular for Sporting, who sit top of the Primeira Liga with seven wins from seven games.

Quenda has started all but one of those matches and chipped in with an assist in his side’s 6-1 mauling of CD Nacional. He has also featured in both of Sporting’s Champions League clashes so far.

The young Portuguese is a versatile right-sided attacker who links up well with his teammates, and Fichajes believe that he “seems destined to shine at the highest level”.

The report continues that “[United] believes that with proper development, he could be a strategic signing for the future. While not the only interested club, the Red Devils have shown serious interest in his services early on.”

Signing promising young players has been a hallmark of United’s approach to the transfer market under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s watch.

The academy has been boosted by the recruitment of high-ceiling teenagers such as Samuel Lusale, James Overy and Chido Obi-Martin, and the intriguing addition of Malian midfielder Sékou Koné who was brought in with one eye already on the first team.

But given his game time at the highest level in Portugal, should the Reds move for Quenda he would no doubt demand first-team action.

This would see him going toe to toe with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo and Antony on the right side of United’s attack, which has failed to spark into life so far this season.

It’s unlikely United would have a clear run at the player, who Fichajes feel has the world at his feet: “it would not be surprising to see him in one of Europe’s top leagues in the near future, leaving his mark as one of the most promising players of his generation.”

United are no strangers to raiding Sporting for top attacking talent, famously securing the services of Cristiano Ronaldo from the 20-time Primeira Liga winners after he tied United’s defence in knots in 2003.

Nani, Marcos Rojo and, more recently, Bruno Fernandes also made the switch from the José Alvalade Stadium to Old Trafford.
