It was a fine weekend for Manchester United, who secured an all-important three points against Chelsea, a result that will surely see them finish the season in one of the top five places in the Premier League.
Whilst Champions League qualification was being almost secured in England, a version of a United side was in action across the globe, with a veterans’ side taking to the pitch in Asia.
The United legends came up against a Suwon Samsung Legends team at the Suwon World Cup Stadium in a charity friendly fixture in South Korea.
As reported by The Sun, it was a side littered with former United stars, with arguably the greatest of them all, Eric Cantona, leading the team out as manager.
Mike Phelan took his accustomed role as number two on the day, but he and the legendary Frenchman could not conjure up a winning formula, with United losing the game 1-0.
King Eric would have expected at least a goal from his players, who included attacking talents such as Ryan Giggs, Park Ji-sung, Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Louis Saha, and Alan Smith.
United also had the rock-solid partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, backed up by Edwin van der Sar in net, with Brazilian twins Fabio and Rafael da Silva also playing at the back.
John O’Shea and Mikael Silvestre were other notable former stars who made the trip, which, despite ending in defeat, did muster up some wonderful memories for United fans.
Even without kicking a ball, Cantona was one of the stars of the show, with his entrance into the stadium carrying all the mystique and drama you would expect from the great man.
Dressed in a sharp suit with a black shirt and trilby hat, Cantona looked more like a rock star than a football manager, with his team of superstars following him out looking like a group of extremely talented backing singers.
Cantona and the team high-fived a group of mascots before setting up for the game, with the Asian crowd going wild at seeing their heroes in the flesh.
Despite the defeat, it will no doubt be seen as another successful trip for the United old guard, who surely enjoyed the reunion and meeting their adoring fans who hold the club so close to their hearts.
