Manchester United have reportedly made a move to sign a surprise midfielder, who is open to the idea of joining such a “prestigious” club.
United are looking to overhaul their squad after an extremely disappointing 2024/25 season in which they finished a lowly 15th place in the Premier League, having suffered a humiliating 18 defeats. Nine of these came at home.
So far this transfer window, the bulk of United’s business has centred on bolstering the attacking department. United announced Matheus Cunha’s arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers last month and they remain in talks with Brentford to try and get a deal for Bryan Mbeumo over the line.
The Red Devils are then expected to shift their attention towards signing a striker before addressing other positions.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are considering signing a midfielder, preferably on an initial loan basis.
Some midfielders mentioned to be on the club’s radar include Douglas Luiz (Juventus), Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City), Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Ederson (Atalanta) and Morten Hjulmand (Sporting Lisbon), just to mention a few names.
Now, according to L’Equipe, United have added a new name to their list – Corentin Tolisso of Olympique Lyonnais.
L’Equipe claim that United have “contacted the entourage” of Tolisson to explore the conditions of a transfer.
The 30-year-old is understood to be “interested” in the project at Old Trafford, but he will not force his way out of Lyon.
The Ligue 1 side are eager to retain him, but they know full well that selling him could ease their current financial strain. This is especially true given that Tolisso is the club’s highest earner.
But United are not alone in their interest in the former Bayern Munich man. Turkish clubs have also approached him but he has rejected them so far.
L’Equipe note that the Saudi Pro League is a “credible destination” for Tolisso, while Atletico Madrid are also keeping close tabs on his situation amidst uncertainty over the future of Rodrigo De Paul, who appears to be closing in on a switch to Inter Miami.
Tolisso is valued at €10m.
The Frenchman made 32 appearances for Ligue 1 last term, contributing an impressive seven goals and four assists. He also struck three gals and provided an additional two assists in 12 Europa League matches.
