Manchester United kick-start the 2026/27 season with a visit to the MKM Stadium on Saturday, 22 August, to face newly promoted Hull City in the Premier League. The Red Devils will be hoping to continue their impressive rise under Michael Carrick, who took charge in January and helped secure a third-placed finish in the league last season.

INEOS have since strengthened the squad by signing Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow. Recent reports suggest that they are close to securing the services of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.

The Cameroonian, however, is unlikely to feature this weekend even if the move goes through, as he is currently sidelined with an ankle injury. Nevertheless, the mood around Old Trafford is upbeat, with all eyes now on the Premier League opener.

While fans are keenly discussing the starting XI that Carrick is likely to select for the game, United have now revealed a key detail about the tie.

United to wear third kit against Hull City

United will wear their new third kit against Hull City, the club has confirmed. The report states: “With our trio of 2026/27 kits now unveiled, it has been confirmed that the newest in the collection, our eye-catching ivory-coloured third shirt, is the one we’ll walk out at the MKM Stadium in.”

“As you may have seen over the past week, dark red and green accents define the shirt, which link historically to Greater Manchester institutions like Salford Lads and Girls Club, with three centralised badges providing a unique look.”

United’s new third kit is an ode to Manchester and Salford’s rich history and industrial heritage, with the club having been founded in 1878 by railway workers. The shirt also references Salford Lads and the Girls Club, both iconic links to culture, sport and community.

The maroon accents in the third kit symbolise the city’s brickwork, the green details are references to the Red Devils’ cultural landmark and the floral artwork is a tribute to local creativity. The shirt, as such, is a celebration of Manchester’s culture, sport, history and community.

When did United last start the season with a third-kit?

United last started a campaign with their third kit during the 2016/17 campaign, when they visited the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth. With Jose Mourinho occupying the hot seat, the Red Devils donned an iconic white shirt and cruised to a 3-1 victory, thanks to goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It would mark the beginning of a fantastic campaign, in which United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League. Although the Special One’s tenure ultimately fell short of the expectations surrounding his appointment, that season remains one of the Red Devils’ most successful in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United, meanwhile, have already debuted their new third kit this month, during the 4-2 defeat at the hands of AC Milan in pre-season. Fans will hope the team will have better luck with the new shirt against the Tigers this weekend.

Final Thoughts

United are coming off a decent pre-season and will be desperate to get a winning start to the new campaign simply to calm the nerves. With the Red Devils also set to return to the Champions League, these are exciting times for fans, and one hopes that the third kit can mark the beginning of another eventful season.
