Manchester United captain Katie Zelem says that the team need to push on in the Barclays Women’s Super League off the back of their Adobe Women’s FA Cup final success against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils defeated Spurs 4-0 at Wembley this afternoon as they collected their first major piece of silverware.

While Manchester United have enjoyed Adobe Women’s FA Cup success, they have struggled to replicate last season’s Barclays Women’s Super League form this term. When speaking to WSL Full-Time, captain Zelem said that The Red Devils have to be pushing on for top three again next season.

“This team needs to be pushing on,” Zelem said. “We need to take the results against Chelsea in the semi’s and the 4-0 [against Spurs]. It was a really dominant performance.

“We’ve obviously still got Chelsea to play [in the league] but next year, we’ve got our eyes on getting in the top three again.”

Zelem lifted the Adobe Women’s FA Cup trophy five years on from her last success with Manchester United. The midfielder says that the main aim is to win as many trophies as possible with the club.

She said “It feels amazing. I’ve had six years here, the first year in the Championship, and it has always been our aim. Since coming up, we’ve wanted to win as many trophies as possible and now we’ve finally achieved it.”

While results have occasionally proved difficult for The Red Devils this season, there is no doubting the positive atmosphere within the team. Zelem highlighted the way that new players have been made to feel part of the club from the moment that they have arrived.

She said “It’s an incredible group, that’s something that Manchester United have always had. Every single year, no matter which players come in, they always seem to bond well. You saw Melvine [Malard] with the trophy and she barely spoke a word of English when she arrived, so I think that speaks volumes about the team. We’ve integrated a lot of new players this year but you can see in the celebrations that it’s really effective.”

Manchester United complete the 2023/2024 season with a fixture against Chelsea at Old Trafford next weekend.
