Manchester United are preparing to finalise a deal for Michael Carrick to take over as caretaker manager, per journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was initially ahead of Carrick in the race. However, the Englishman has now emerged as the favourite for the coveted role at Old Trafford.

The decision is expected to be finalised on Monday, with the club’s hierarchy aiming to give Carrick as much time as possible to prepare for Manchester City’s visit on Saturday.
Carrick has been out of a job since being sacked by Middlesbrough in July last year after the club missed out on a Championship play-off spot.
He led Boro to the play-off semi-finals in his debut campaign, despite the club sitting just a point above the relegation zone at the time of his appointment.
He guided them to an eighth-place league finish and the last four of the League Cup in 2023-24.
Carrick played as a midfielder for United between 2006 and 2018, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League.
He remained at the club after retirement, joining Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.
Carrick led United to victories over Villarreal and Arsenal, and a draw at Chelsea, before Ralf Rangnick replaced him.
