Michael Carrick would receive ‘a lot of support’ from the Manchester United squad if considered for the permanent manager’s position.
Carrick has impressed since taking interim charge at Old Trafford, following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal last month. The 44-year-old is unbeaten in five Premier League games, winning four, and has lifted the Red Devils into the Champions League places.
United are conducting their search for a permanent manager, with multiple options under consideration for the summer.
Among those believes to be in the frame are Oliver Glasner, who will leave Crystal Palace at the end of the campaign, Gareth Southgate and Julian Nagelsmann. The latter could leave Germany after the 2026 World Cup. However, Thomas Tuchel, who had been linked, has signed a new contract with England.
Despite Carrick’s inexperience, his impact so far has won admirers in the dressing room. Discussing his chances of landing the permanent job, Manchester Evening News writer Tyrone Marshall said there is strong support for Carrick within the squad.
“Both publicly and privately, they [players] are speaking warmly of Carrick. He has put a smile back on the faces of a lot of those players and Bruno Fernandes has been very vocal in his support of the 44-year-old.
“United insist they are planning a “thorough” recruitment process to get the right person in charge of the 2026/27 season, and Carrick has certainly put himself in the frame for that, but I wouldn’t expect any decision until much later in the season, and possibly beyond the end of the season.
“But if the players are asked, then I think Carrick will get a lot of support, especially if results continue as they are. They have enjoyed his coaching sessions, the style of football and the subtle changes he has made behind the scenes.”
