Manchester United could look to bring in a new left winger this summer, and Ajax’s Mika Godts is emerging as a candidate.

The 20-year-old Belgian has been lighting up the Eredivisie and drawing comparisons to some of the finest attackers of his generation.

Predominantly operating from the left and favouring his stronger right foot, Godts has drawn consistent comparisons to Eden Hazard for his directness, pace and ability to beat defenders one-on-one.

He has registered 17 goals and 14 assists across all competitions – one of the most productive campaigns by any winger in European football outside the top five leagues.

Godts recently surpassed 100 appearances for Ajax and made his debut for the senior Belgian national team.

Interim manager Michael Carrick has publicly admitted that United require a right-footed left winger, and Godts fits that profile.

However, there are significant obstacles. United are one of several clubs interested in Godts, and Ajax are unlikely to sanction a move unless an irresistible offer is made, with Godts under contract until 2029.

The Dutch giants are expected to demand around £65 million, a significant sum for a player yet to prove himself outside the Eredivisie.

The spectre of the Antony transfer, which cost United over £80m and ended in disappointment, will inevitably loom over every conversation about an Ajax winger at Old Trafford.

However, Godts is a different proposition entirely – he is younger, more prolific and regarded as having a technical ceiling that is far from being reached.

United must now decide how serious they are about pursuing him.
