Manchester United have identified Crysencio Summerville as one of their leading targets for the left wing.

The West Ham winger is firmly on Michael Carrick’s shortlist, though the club’s immediate priority remains strengthening the midfield.

Any move is tied to a bigger question, however. Sky Sports reports that a deal for Summerville is likely to depend on what happens with Marcus Rashford’s future.

Until that is resolved, United are unlikely to move decisively for a wide player.

Rashford’s situation remains unsettled. He is due to return to Carrington after the World Cup, with Barcelona’s option to buy having expired.

The forward would prefer a return to Catalonia, but United want a permanent sale rather than another loan, and he has not closed the door on reintegration.

Summerville’s appeal is easy to grasp. He offers pace, directness and the ability to beat defenders one-on-one, qualities United lack out wide.

Comfortable on either flank, he is at his most dangerous cutting in from the left. The Dutchman impressed at the World Cup despite a difficult club campaign.

He scored on his tournament debut against Japan and returned two goals and two assists before the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the last 32.

His price makes him an attractive option, too. West Ham, relegated to the Championship, value Summerville at around £50m, considerably less than alternatives such as Morgan Rogers and Iliman Ndiaye.

Mathias Fernandez-Pardo of Lille is also under consideration. United arrive as frontrunners after two developments.

Liverpool, previously interested, have cooled their pursuit, while United themselves missed out on midfielder Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham.

Carrick still hopes to sign two midfielders and a winger before the window shuts.
