Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United career could soon take a decisive turn, with reports from Italy suggesting Napoli are preparing a renewed bid to sign the young midfielder in January. After a frustrating start to the season under Ruben Amorim, Mainoo is said to be open to a move that would guarantee more consistent playing time.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis remains determined to bring Mainoo to Serie A, having already failed in a late attempt during the summer window. The Italian club are reportedly willing to pay the entirety of his £35,000-a-week wages to secure a deal. Initial discussions point towards a loan move with an option to buy at the end of the season — a structure similar to previous deals that have proved successful for the club.
De Laurentiis has sought advice from current Napoli players Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay, both of whom have spoken highly of Mainoo’s potential. Their input appears to have strengthened the club’s resolve to push forward with the move, particularly with Antonio Conte keen to add midfield depth ahead of a demanding second half of the season.

Mainoo’s situation at Manchester United has been a point of quiet frustration behind the scenes. Despite being viewed internally as one of the most promising graduates of the club’s academy in recent years, he has struggled for consistent minutes under Amorim. The 20-year-old has featured just eight times in all competitions so far this season, starting only once — in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
With Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes entrenched in central roles, opportunities have been limited. Amorim previously blocked Mainoo’s departure in September, insisting he wanted to develop the midfielder further at Old Trafford. However, the player’s lack of involvement has since prompted doubts about his short-term future in Manchester.
Amorim recently commented on the midfielder’s situation, saying: “I believe in him a lot. He is a top player. But some people think Kobbie Mainoo is already the finished product. He can do so much better. Maybe it’s not fair, but I think I’m helping him by demanding more.”
Napoli’s interest in United talent is not new. Scott McTominay has flourished since making the move to Italy, winning the Serie A Player of the Season award during their title-winning campaign. Likewise, Rasmus Hojlund — currently on loan — has made a bright start, scoring four goals in seven appearances.
Mainoo could follow a similar path, benefiting from a change of environment and regular first-team football. For Napoli, the move represents both a calculated gamble and a continuation of a recruitment strategy that has yielded significant success in recent years.
Beyond club concerns, Mainoo’s ambitions extend to international football. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, the midfielder is acutely aware that he must be playing regularly to remain in contention for England selection. Staying at United without significant game time could jeopardise that goal, while a move abroad might offer the platform he needs to develop further.
A January switch to Naples would not only offer Mainoo a chance to reignite his career but also serve as a statement of intent from Napoli, who remain keen to strengthen their squad as they chase another Serie A title.
