Manchester United Predicted XI vs Brighton: Luke Shaw Nears Return for Carabao Cup Tie

Manchester United go into Wednesday night needing a response. The 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester City has left a mark, and not only because of the result. The winning goal from Erling Haaland should have been ruled out, but that changes nothing now. What matters for Michael Carrick is the next game, and the need to steady things before a trip to Fulham and then the international break.

There is at least one piece of good news. Luke Shaw is close. After missing out with muscle tightness, the left-back could return against Brighton. United were forced to use Patrick Dorgu there at the weekend, and while he did the job, Shaw gives them balance, control and experience. If he is fit enough for minutes, Carrick will want them.

Luke Shaw return could reshape United

Shaw is not the only defender edging back. Matthijs de Ligt is also believed to be nearing a comeback after a back problem that has kept him out since November last year. United have missed him. That has been obvious. Their defending early in the season has been too loose, too open, too easy to play through.

For this cup tie, though, rotation looks likely. Karl Darlow may replace Senne Lammens in goal. Noussair Mazraoui is pushing to start at right-back after Diogo Dalot struggled against City. In central defence, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire could be protected, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven in line to come in.

Carabao Cup rotation expected at Old Trafford

Further forward, Dorgu may shift into a more advanced role on the left, which would allow Marcus Rashford a breather. The right side is less straightforward. Amad Diallo remains out with an ankle injury, so Bryan Mbeumo may have to start, although Shea Lacey is another option.

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans have become Carrick’s default pairing, but this feels like a night when Andrey Santos gets a chance. Carlos Baleba is still unavailable with an ankle issue, which limits the alternatives.

Brighton clash offers chance for fringe players

Bruno Fernandes should keep his place as the No 10, even with Mason Mount available after being an unused substitute in the derby. Up front, Benjamin Sesko looks well placed to lead the line ahead of Matheus Cunha, with Joshua Zirkzee likely to stay in reserve.

The likely shape is 4-2-3-1, practical and familiar. Carrick needs a win, some rhythm and, ideally, a few returning players. United do not need drama here. They need competence.
