Manchester United appear to be moving towards signing Pedro Goncalves this summer.
Back in February, The Peoples Person relayed that Man United had taken an interest in Goncalves, with the club monitoring his recovery from injury.
In fact, the interest in Goncalves appeared to be so great that United reportedly made an informal enquiry into his availability.
Still, United weren’t the only clubs that had taken note of the Portuguese winger’s fine performances in Lisbon. Aston Villa and West Ham United both emerged as interested parties, threatening to sabotage United’s pursuit.
But even if the race for Goncalves’s signature becomes increasingly heated, United appear to have an advantage over any other club that tries to compete with them.
Theatre of Red reported that while United remain interested in acquiring Goncalves, the player himself is also keen on making the transfer happen.
“Although we’re advised that nothing is advanced at this stage, the player would be keen on the prospect of reuniting with his former coach in the North West,” the report read, referring to United manager Ruben Amorim.
Under Amorim’s guidance, Goncalves and his teammates won three Liga Portugals, two Taça da Liga’s, and one Portuguese Super Cup.
This season, Goncalves has continued his fine form, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 14 league appearances, thereby performing admirably despite his lingering muscle injury.
In fact, while his team struggled to find their form after Amorim’s departure for Old Trafford earlier this season, Goncalves and his teammates put in a massive performance to retain the Liga Portugal title this season.
Should United decide to sign the Portuguese winger, he could prove to be a massive asset given his versatility as well as his experience playing in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
What’s more, his price tag is believed to be in the region of €30m, making him an affordable signing who could greatly bolster United by replacing the likes of Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony.
