Manchester United have suffered a blow in their hunt for Geovany Quenda, with Ruben Amorim about to miss out on the youngster to Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have a deal in place to sign Quenda, who has been linked with a move to Man Utd in the summer transfer window.
The well-known and well-respected Italian journalist has revealed on X that Quenda has already undergone a medical and will join Chelsea in 2026.
The 17-year-old right-winger/right wing-back has said yes to Maresca’s plans, with Chelsea and Sporting already having an agreement in place.
This will come as a blow for Man United, who have been looking to seal a deal for the Portugal Under-21 international in the summer transfer window.
According to A Bola (print edition, March 12, page 13), Man United are keen on the young Portuguese full-back and are ready to pay €60 million (£50.26 million) for him.
Man United manager Amorim is well aware of Quenda, having given him his debut when he was in charge of Sporting Lisbon.
Sky journalist Sacha Tavolieri also reported Man United’s interest in the youngster earlier this month.
Arsenal, too, are claimed to be interested in Quenda, who, according to Amorim in O Jogo in October 2024, is “a very talented kid, very strong physically” and is “going to be a great player”.
While Man United will be disappointed that Quenda is going to join Chelsea, they should not lose sleep over it.
After all, Quenda is only 17 years of age. He is not the finished article and is still growing as a footballer.
While it is good to have young and talented players in their squad, Man United need more established and mature players if they are to get back into playing regularly in the UEFA Champions League and competing for major honours.
Quenda has made only 43 appearances for Sporting so far in his career. He has scored two goals and given eight assists in those games.
