Manchester United retain an interest in signing Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, after seeing an enquiry turned down in the summer.
Erik ten Hag’s team approached Barcelona over a potential deal to sign Lopez in the summer transfer window as the Dutchman looked to reshape his midfield.
United had hoped Barcelona’s need to raise funds to register new signings could lead to an openness to his exit, but were met with a demand for the player’s €400m release clause.
El Nacional are reporting that the Red Devils retain their interest in signing Lopez, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, who also made an approach in the summer.
The 21-year-old had a breakthrough season in 2023/24 after returning from a loan spell at third-tier Linares.
Lopez scored 11 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions and made one appearance as Spain won Euro 2024.
He then represented La Roja at the Olympics where, alongside teammate Alex Baena, became just the second and third players to win the European Championship and Olympic gold in the same summer.
Manchester United view Lopez as a fresh addition to their midfield, amid doubts over the long-term futures of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro.
