Manchester United tried to hijack Liverpool’s move for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Red Devils want defensive reinforcements at Old Trafford with Harry Maguire out of contract this summer.
They attempted to convince Jacquet to ditch a move to Anfield in recent hours, but he will be joining Liverpool.
The 20-year-old will join the Reds in the summer in a €70 million deal following an agreement, and Man United will have to look elsewhere for a centre-back.
Jacquet is expected to have his medical today and will remain at Rennes for the rest of the season before moving to the Premier League.
It would have been huge for Man United had they managed to hijack the deal, but they no longer hold the pull they once had.
Interim manager Michael Carrick is hoping to restore the glory days at the Theatre of Dreams and has started his reign with three league wins in a row.
They have won against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham and will take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before a trip to West Ham United three days later.
Winning both games would be huge for Man United as it would help them consolidate their current position in the league table.
They are fourth after 24 games and will be playing in the Champions League next season if they maintain their current momentum.
Carrick will hope his players can keep delivering, and he may have what it takes to take the club to the next level.
