Michael Carrick’s Red Devils face La Liga opposition in Stockholm as Premier League preparations continue

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United heads back across Scandinavia this afternoon to face Atletico Madrid in Stockholm. Previous outings in Helsinki and Trondheim have yielded a defeat by Wrexham and a win over Rosenborg, but this meeting with Atletico, the fourth-place finishers in La Liga last season, will provide the most accurate litmus test yet of the Red Devils’ preparations for the coming campaign.

Carrick has not done a massive amount of experimenting with his lineups this summer but it was his academy talents who did the business against Rosenborg, with only one of the five goals scored by a first-team player. His summer signings have made a positive start, too, with Andrey Santos making a great impression in the base of midfield. He will not be joined by fellow new arrival Youri Tielemans, though, after he failed to make the travelling squad for this match.
