Manchester United and Fulham go head-to-head in the FA Cup fifth round this weekend, with both sides sensing an opportunity to advance deeper into the competition.
United, under the increasingly scrutinised Ruben Amorim, edged past Ipswich Town in a chaotic 3-2 victory midweek. The performance was as erratic as the season itself, but history suggests that writing off the FA Cup holders would be unwise. After all, they stumbled through last year’s competition with similar inconsistency and still lifted the trophy under Erik ten Hag.

Marco Silva’s Fulham, however, have different ideas. The Cottagers are enjoying an excellent campaign, and a strong cup run could elevate their season from impressive to unforgettable. A victory at Old Trafford would send a clear statement of their ambition.
United will be without left-back Patrick Dorgu, who is suspended following his red card against Ipswich. Injuries continue to plague Amorim’s side, with Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo unlikely to feature again this season. Mason Mount, Jonny Evans, Toby Collyer, Kobbie Mainoo, and Luke Shaw remain sidelined, with Amorim confirming that none of United’s injured players will return against Fulham. There could, however, be an opportunity for young striker Chido Obi, who has been included in recent matchday squads.
Fulham are dealing with their own selection issues. Kenny Tete, Harry Wilson, and Reiss Nelson are all ruled out, while a late decision will be made on Emile Smith Rowe, who has recently returned to training. Sasa Lukic is available for selection despite his Premier League suspension after accumulating ten yellow cards.
Fulham have already suffered defeat at Old Trafford this season, though that now feels like a distant memory. The Cottagers arrive in fine form and, on paper, should have the edge against an injury-ravaged United side still searching for consistency.
However, United’s relationship with the FA Cup often defies logic. No matter the circumstances, they have a habit of finding a way through in this competition. That sense of inevitability leaves the door open for a result that many would see as a surprise United victory.
