Manchester United host Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday in the first Manchester derby of the season, with Michael Carrick looking to become the first United manager in 113 years to win both of his opening Manchester derbies in the league.

Carrick has won nine of his last 10 Premier League home games since returning to the club, and United go into the weekend on the back of a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah in midweek. United have conceded twice in each of their three Premier League matches this season, a pattern last seen in the 2020-21 campaign, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side went on to finish second.

Carlos Baleba (ankle), Matthijs de Ligt (back), Manuel Ugarte (knee), Tom Heaton (hamstring) and Amad Diallo (ankle) all remain unavailable. Luke Shaw missed the Sabah game as a precaution after being withdrawn with cramp against Everton, but Carrick indicated he could return for what would be his 300th Premier League appearance, saying the club “didn’t want to take any risks” and would “see how he is after this one.”

Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha both scored in the win over Sabah and are expected to start together, meaning Marcus Rashford could be the one to make way from the front four. Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo are expected to keep their places either side of Cunha, with Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo continuing in central midfield.
