Red Devils head to Finland for first of six pre-season outings

Manchester United get the ball rolling on their six-match pre-season campaign this weekend as they face Championship side Wrexham in Finland.

After a rocky start to the 2025/26 campaign, Michael Carrick’s transformative appointment boosted the club’s fortunes massively. After signing a permanent deal, he has returned them to the Champions League and is preparing for what will surely be another gruelling season.

This match will give him a first opportunity to see his squad in action, and he will hope to give some academy talent and summer signings a run out. Andrey Santos joined from Chelsea last week and should be in line for his debut.

Wrexham, meanwhile, missed out on a place in the Championship promotion play-offs after being pipped by Hull, with just two points the difference.

It will be a second pre-season fixture of the summer for the Welsh outfit, who held Wisla Krakow to a goalless draw in Poland last week.

Manchester United vs Wrexham is scheduled for a 4pm BST kick-off on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

The match will take place at Helsingin Olympiastadion in Helsinki, Finland.

Manchester United vs Wrexham team news

Andrey Santos is expected to make his Man United debut here after he moved north from Chelsea earlier this month. The match will likely come too soon for fellow summer signing Youri Tielemans, who remains on holiday after Belgium’s World Cup campaign.

Plenty of other first-team stars have already joined up at Carrington, though. Among their number are Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

Many of those United stars who represented their nations at this summer’s World Cup will still be enjoying their holidays and may not be involved here. That should include captain Bruno Fernandes.

Carrick will surely be keen to give some academy youngsters a run-out here. Jack Fletcher cracked the first team towards the end of last season and so may feature, while fit-again Harry Amass will hope to impress after returning from a loan at Norwich.

Liberato Cacace is expected to feature for Wrexham after representing New Zealand at the World Cup.

Manchester United vs Wrexham prediction

For Carrick and United, a win will not necessarily be the expectation in this, their first match of the summer, where there is plenty more at stake than the full-time result.

There are fresh faces to integrate and new tactics to experiment with. Facing an unfamiliar opposition already one match into their own pre-season, United’s rust may dull their chances.

Wrexham are a solid team and will be a promotion contender this season, but United should be relatively confident coming into this match. A draw might be the most likely outcome.

Draw, 2-2.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

The most recent competitive meeting between these sides came in 1995, with United winning 5-2 in the FA Cup fourth round. Among the goalscorers that day were Denis Irwin, Ryan Giggs, and Brian McClair.

United have won all five of their competitive matches against Wrexham and kept a clean sheet in four of them.

Manchester United wins: 5
