Harry Maguire and Mason Mount doubtful as Lisandro Martinez closes in on return

Harry Maguire and Mason Mount are injury concerns for Manchester United ahead of the Premier League clash with Brighton this evening.

Maguire was the hero as he notched a late winner against Liverpool a week ago, while Mount also impressed during the resurgent Red Devils’ shock first victory at Anfield in nine years.

However, both players are now battling knocks and it remains to be seen if they will be ready for the visit of Brighton to Old Trafford.

This weekend’s game will definitely come too soon for Lisandro Martinez, though the Argentine is progressing well in training as he seeks to return from a long-term knee injury.

"The squad is fine," United head coach Ruben Amorim said on Friday. "We have some doubts, we had some issues in the week with Harry Maguire and Mason Mount. Knocks, nothing serious and we will see tomorrow.

"Licha [Martinez] is out. He trained really well. He was on the next pitch and I was watching.

“He's training really well, the knee is looking well but I don't want to say a specific week [for his return] and then it depends on Licha, whether he wins the spot.”

If Maguire in unable to feature, then Leny Yoro should slot into United’s back three against Brighton alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Luke Shaw, while Benjamin Sesko could also return up front if Mount isn’t fit, with Matheus Cunha potentially taking up a deeper role.

Doubtful: Harry Maguire

Alternatively, Amad Diallo could be pushed further forward and either the fit-again Noussair Mazraoui or Patrick Dorgu drafted in at wing-back. Perhaps even both if Diogo Dalot needs a rest.

Manuel Ugarte would be the most likely player to come in if Amorim opted to freshen up in midfield, with Kobbie Mainoo still getting limited chances to make an impact.

Captain Bruno Fernandes has played in one of those two slots behind the main striker in Amorim’s system plenty before and provides another option.

Deadline Day signing Senne Lammens has hugely impressed in his first two outings since replacing Altay Bayindir as United’s first-choice goalkeeper and will surely start again at Old Trafford, where he was flatteringly compared to the great Peter Schmeichel on debut against Sunderland.

Predicted Manchester United XI (3-4-2-1): Lammens; De Ligt, Yoro, Shaw; Amad, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dalot; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko

Doubts: Maguire, Mount

Injured: Martinez
