Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has been called up to the Netherlands squad after Brian Brobbey suffered an injury in the 1-1 draw with Germany.

According to NY Times, the Sunderland striker was forced off in the first half in Amsterdam with an apparent hamstring issue and has returned to his club. Zirkzee replaces him in Xavi Hernandez’s squad.

Zirkzee, 25, has six caps, last appearing against Bosnia and Herzegovina in November 2024. He has made four substitute appearances for United this season and is yet to score.

Brobbey’s withdrawal is a setback after he arrived on the back of a Premier League hat-trick for Sunderland at Manchester City. Roma’s Donyell Malen was not called up due to injury, while Memphis Depay and Wout Weghorst were also left out of the nation’s first post-World Cup squad.

Thursday’s match, Xavi’s first as Netherlands head coach, saw Felix Nmecha give Jurgen Klopp’s side a first-half lead before Cody Gakpo equalised in stoppage time. The Netherlands now have three Nations League games this break, home and away against Serbia either side of a trip to Greece.
