Former Manchester United full-back Alvaro Carreras has been on Ruben Amorim’s radar, as per reports.
One of the biggest reasons behind Erik ten Hag’s downfall and eventual sacking at United was his underwhelming decision-making when it came to transfers.
The Mancunian giants spent over £500 million on bringing 21 new players during Ten Hag’s managerial tenure, and also sanctioned high-profile exits. It is not far-fetched to say the players who departed Old Trafford in the last three summers have fared better than the players who arrived in Manchester during the same period.
In particular, Carreras has taken huge strides since leaving United in January of this year. He initially joined Benfica in a loan deal with an option to buy, believed to be worth €6 million with €3 million in add-ons.
The Spaniard, who joined United from Real Madrid’s academy in 2020, took little time to impress the Benfica camp, who exercised the option to turn the deal into a permanent one this summer.
The 21-year-old has had an even better start to the new season, having established himself as a key part of Bruno Lage’s Benfica.
It has been previously reported that due to his brilliant form, Europe’s biggest clubs, including United, have shown interest in his services. Now, it has emerged that Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim was also monitoring his progress.
According to GIVEMESPORT, the incoming United manager “has been watching his performances at close quarters.”
It is further claimed that United have “refused to rule out” the possibility of making a move for their former talent “as they could take advantage of a buyback clause.”
Wing-backs are very crucial in Amorim’s back-three system. However, United lack quality options in that department, especially at the left flank.
Luke Shaw has the ability to play as a wing-back and make an impact in the final third, but his injury record is likely going to be a huge cause of concern. Meanwhile, there are question marks over Malacia’s fitness as well as skill sets for that role.
Carreras, meanwhile, is known for his attacking style of play and could prove to be a shrewd buy, thanks to the reported buyback clause for United in his Benfica contract.
