Sarina Wiegman’s side have made a habit of recording large winning scorelines during their qualification campaign so far and that theme continued against a sorry Latvia side in Riga this evening.
Toone opened the scoring for England after just eight minutes when she found the top corner after the ball had fortunately fallen into her path before the same player netted a second goal four minutes later, ending a flowing move involving Beth Mead and Fran Kirby.
Millie Bright then saw a looping effort strike the post before Ellen White tapped in a third to move into joint-second in England’s list of all-time top goalscorers.
Bright then tapped home from a free-kick as England went 4-0 up before White saw a penalty saved by home keeper Enija-Anna Vaivode after Lauren Hemp had been fouled in the area. White’s luck seemed to evade her with the player also heading against the bar just before the half-time whistle.
Beth England saw two shots saved in quick succession after the break before Mead got her name on the scoresheet when she coolly slotted the ball beyond Vaivode. Toone then completed her hat-trick as she showed great persistence to advance towards goal and fire the ball into the roof of the Latvian net.
Rachel Daly soon tapped home a seventh England goal before Mead saw a powerful effort superbly saved by Viavode.
Latvia are known for defensive frailties late on in games and they were breached three more times in the final 15 minutes. Captain Leah Williamson curled home an eighth goal before Georgia Stanway drilled a ninth into the far corner. The scoring was completed by Daly who latched onto a Mead pass and rounded the keeper before placing the ball into an empty net.
England will now look ahead to next month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against Austria in Sunderland and Latvia in Doncaster.
