Ron Gourlay’s self-imposed six April deadline to appoint a sporting director at Valencia has passed, and the search continues. Head coach Carlos Corberán has been involved in the process to ease his workload. Candidates remain despite the club’s decline under the Lim family.
Asked how he would respond to a call from Ron Gourlay or Carlos Corberán, Manolo Salvador said: “I would not hesitate.” He was speaking on La Banda on À Punt Esports.
“I am Valencian, from the province of València. I was at Levante, yes, but Levante let me go. I am a professional,” he added.
The 62-year-old, now technical secretary at Croatia’s NK Istra, hails from Faura. “I was not a Levante fan by birth. In my town everyone was Valencia, my father and friends were Valencia CF,” he said.
A former midfielder, Salvador played for Faura, joined Sagunto in 1986, then moved to Villarreal and Albacete. He signed for Levante in 1997, featured only a few times in a season that ended in relegation to Segunda B, retired that summer and entered Levante’s technical staff, leaving in November 2021 as the top official.
From 2008 to 2016, as sporting director with limited resources, Levante won promotion in 2010, then qualified for the Europa League the next season after finishing sixth. They played in 2012/13, going out in the last 16 to Rubin Kazan, and he is remembered as the architect of one of their best teams.
