Bayern Munich have confirmed Manuel Neuer has suffered a calf muscle tear. The club said in a statement that the 39-year-old, who captains the side, will be sidelined without a return date.

He was withdrawn at half-time in Saturday's 3-0 win over Werder Bremen, a result that moved the champions six points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga.

The substitution was initially considered precautionary and not serious. A scan on Sunday showed the damage was worse than first thought.

Bayern will now plan without their goalkeeper while he recovers.

Neuer has had recurring calf issues, which forced him to miss 10 matches last season. He turns 40 in March.
