Two days before Bayern Munich’s Champions League round of 16 return leg against Atalanta, Manuel Neuer has resumed pitch training, Merkur reports.

The 39-year-old suffered a calf fibre tear during his comeback against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 6 March. In a session of short sprints, agility drills and ground-level saves, he avoided any airborne dives.

The workout, overseen by goalkeeper coach Michael Rechner and rehab coach Simon Martinello, appeared to serve as a fitness check before Wednesday. The Atalanta tie will most likely come too soon for him.

Jonas Urbig’s status is also unclear. The 22-year-old missed Saturday’s 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Bayer Leverkusen after a concussion in the first leg against Atalanta, and a decision on his availability for the return leg is due today, Monday.

With third-choice Sven Ulreich and fourth-choice Leon Klanac also sidelined, a young goalkeeper could step in if neither Neuer nor Urbig is passed fit.

One option is 16-year-old Leonard Prescott, who was on the bench for the last two matches, against Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen. Another is 19-year-old Jannis Bärtl, who has started the past six games for Bayern’s reserves in the Regionalliga this season.
