Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee injury while playing for Uruguay in a 1-0 defeat to Spain, with initial tests indicating a torn cruciate ligament.

After landing awkwardly as he challenged Pedri, the 25-year-old was taken off on a stretcher on 45 minutes. The club said in a statement that he suffered a knee ligament injury on international duty, and that assessment is ongoing to determine treatment and the length of rehabilitation. It also wished him a speedy recovery and promised support throughout his return.

Ugarte spent 2023-2024 at PSG before a €50 million move to Manchester United in 2024.

If the suspected cruciate damage is confirmed, the Uruguay midfielder could be sidelined for several months.

The match was played at Estadio Akron in Zapopan on Friday, and Alex Baena’s 42nd-minute goal eliminated La Celeste.
