Diego Maradona’s 1986 Argentina v Belgium semi-final shirt sold for €400,000 at a Paris auction on Saturday, the day’s top price among World Cup 1982 and 1986 memorabilia. According to L'Équipe, the price is believed to be a record for a shirt sold at auction in France.

The jersey had been guided at €350,000 to €400,000 before the sale.

After that 2-0 win, the Argentina No 10, who scored twice, handed the shirt to the Bayern Munich goalkeeper in exchange for his left boot. Maradona added his signature in 2016.

A Johan Cruyff shirt, obtained by Pfaff on his Belgium debut against the Netherlands in May 1976, a 2-1 defeat, fetched €130,000, well above its €30,000 to €40,000 estimate.

Also in demand, Harald Schumacher’s red jersey from West Germany v France at the 1982 World Cup semi-final, 3-3 after extra time and 5-4 on penalties, went for €35,000. The German keeper, who committed an unpunished assault on Patrick Battiston, had his shirt taken at full time by French goalkeeper Jean-Luc Etorri. It had been valued at €12,000 to €15,000.

From the Bossis collection, the highest bid was for Vassili Rats’s CCCP shirt from France v USSR, a 1-1 draw in the 1986 group stage. The Dynamo Kiev defender scored the Soviet goal that day. Estimated at €1,000 to €1,500, it sold for €6,700.
