Man City took the lead in the sixth minute when Alfie Dorrington deflected Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross into his own net.

Omar Marmoush thought he had doubled the Cityzens lead in the 23rd minute with a clinical finish but his effort was deemed offside.

Salford showed more attacking intent before the end of the first half as former Liverpool youth prospect Benjamin Woodborn called James Trafford into action with a half-volley.

Just before the break, Brandon Cooper squandered a big opportunity to draw the visitors level, heading wide from a corner.

Shortly after the break, Ryan McAidoo’s through ball found Tijjani Reijnders, but Matthew Young smothered the one-on-one effort.

On the hour mark, Kelly N’mai went close to drawing Salford level with a powerful strike at the near post, but Trafford was equal to the task.

Chances dried up until the 78th minute when substitute Antoine Semenyo rifled an effort into the side netting.

City sealed the victory in the 81st minute after Rayan Cherki’s cross was parried, leaving Marc Guehi with an easy finish for his first goal for the club.

Semenyo came close to adding a third with a low shot, but was denied by the post as City ended the game strongly.
