Marc Overmars has stepped back from his role as Royal Antwerp sporting director with immediate effect on medical grounds, the player said in a post on the club's X account.

Aged 53 and in post since March 2022, he has faced years of fatigue and intense stress that peaked last weekend, and no longer feels able to live a hectic, stressful professional life.

He previously suffered a heart attack in December 2022. His energy is now exhausted and, without listening to his body, the risk of a poor outcome is very high.

He will therefore stop all professional activities in the coming period.

The former Netherlands midfielder won 85 caps and scored 18 goals, and played for Ajax from 1992 to 1997, Barcelona from 1997 to 2000 and Arsenal from 2000 to 2004.
