Marc‑André ter Stegen will join Girona on loan for the remainder of the 2025-26 season as he seeks regular minutes before the 2026 World Cup. According to BuLi News, the Barcelona goalkeeper is set to move temporarily.
The 33-year-old has been a mainstay at Barcelona since 2014, winning multiple La Liga titles and a Champions League. Injuries and the rise of younger options have restricted his game time this season.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick, formerly in charge of Germany, confirmed the move, saying the club had “decided on a different path for the future.” He praised Ter Stegen as a “fantastic goalkeeper” and wished him well, stressing the loan helps player and club.
Barcelona will cover most of his wages, with Girona contributing a smaller share. A clause reportedly prevents him from playing against Barcelona this season.
For Girona, his experience brings leadership and top-level quality as they look to climb the La Liga table.
For Ter Stegen, the switch offers a route back to consistent minutes and preparation for Germany’s World Cup campaign. Leaving Barcelona is a notable change, and it could be the chance to rediscover full form.
