Ipswich Town's Marcelino Nunez's two-word response to Norwich City fans is sure to cause a stir

Ipswich Town have secured their return to the Premier League, with an emphatic 3-0 victory on the final day against Queens Park Rangers enough to see Kieran McKenna's side bounce back at the first time of asking.

It's not quite been the season many had expected from the Suffolk outfit upon their relegation, with many outlining the Tractor Boys as clear favourites for the division upon their return to the second tier.

Despite this, Ipswich fans will care little at this stage, having secured their ticket back to the top tier at the first time of asking, with Premier League football returning to Portman Road in a matter of months.

Northern Irish head coach McKenna will already be planning what his summer may look like, with some big decisions to make regarding who out of the current playing squad is capable of making the jump to the top flight and having a positive impact next season.

One of those he will have to decide on will be Chilean attacking-midfielder Marcelino Nunez, who has failed to cement his role in the starting 11 at the club since his controversial £10 million move from rivals Norwich City in the summer.

Nunez hasn't been particularly quiet in lauding the promotion over his former club, and his recent comments will only add fuel to the fire.

There will be fewer more unpopular people in the city of Norwich than Marcelino Nunez.

The Chilean made 119 appearances for the Canaries across three years at Carrow Road, and made the controversial move south to Suffolk in the summer in a £10 million deal, becoming the first senior player to directly transfer between the two clubs since goalkeeper Andy Marshall in 2001.

Unsurprisingly, this move didn't go down well with Norwich supporters, with sporting director Ben Knapper met with a huge degree of animosity for his decision to sanction the deal.

The 26-year-old has since scored three and assisted nine in 36 league appearances for Ipswich on their way to promotion, and has not held back in throwing shade at his former club.

According to East Anglian Daily Times' Stuart Watson via X, when Nunez was asked whether he had any message for Norwich supporters, the Chilean responded with: "Maybe... unlucky!"

This comes after the midfielder was seen berating his former club during their open bus celebration around the city, in which he had few kind words to say about his former employers.

Nunez was booed on in the 75th minute in Ipswich's 3-0 victory over Norwich back in October, and was similarly met with a much more hostile atmosphere in the reverse fixture at Carrow Road in April, where he was substituted on, made a few fouls, only to be subbed off again, as the Tractor Boys completed a historic double over their bitter rivals.

As attentions at Portman Road turn to the summer, McKenna will be planning what his squad will look like in the top flight next season.

Indeed, last time they were in the top flight, they suffered relegation at the first time of asking, and now, having bounced back at the first time of asking, Ipswich will be hoping to maintain their place in the Premier League next time around.

Nunez could play a key role for McKenna in the top flight, though, having made just 25 league starts for them this season, his place in the starting 11 is not entirely secure - especially as Ipswich will need to recruit in multiple areas of the pitch to make sure they're ready for the top flight challenge.

Time will tell how big a role the Chilean will play in Suffolk next season, but for now, he will be enjoying the opportunity to take a dig at his former club.
