Marcelo Bielsa gathered Uruguay’s players after their group-stage elimination by Spain and, according to Tyc Sports, told them he had felt alone during the tournament and took the opportunity to say goodbye.

The meeting was calm and free of arguments, although the head coach appeared visibly dejected.

Bielsa had not been a universally backed choice in Uruguay for some years, yet he remained in post because the federation could not afford his release clause.

During the campaign, aspects of his training methods were questioned by some players, who linked them to injuries. Before the final group game against Spain, the squad also met him to request a tactical change.

Uruguay ended their 2026 World Cup without a group-stage win, drawing with Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde, and losing to Spain.

Flamengo had three players in the squad for this tournament. Varela started all three matches, De La Cruz was among the substitutes, and Arrascaeta was included but did not feature due to a calf injury.
