Marcelo Bielsa has urged caution over Arrascaeta’s recovery as Uruguay include the Flamengo playmaker for the Copa do Mundo.
According to Coluna Do Fla, the midfielder fractured his clavicle in a Copa Libertadores match against Estudiantes (ARG), and on Monday Bielsa discussed his condition and called for a measured approach.
He asked observers to consider how long Arrascaeta has gone without playing and the short gap between a first training game and the match, noting that covering unlimited distances after two months out does not define fitness levels.
Bielsa recommended the bone should not be subjected to further friction until Friday 12 June, before Monday’s game, which will be Uruguay’s debut.
Arrascaeta has been sidelined since the 29 April fixture in La Plata. He underwent surgery to repair the fracture and is now working back on the pitch, though he has not joined more intensive sessions.
He has been called up by Uruguay for the Copa do Mundo, will miss the preparation friendlies and is only expected to return in the group stage, which begins on 11 June.
