Marcelo Paz has backed Memphis Depay to remain at Corinthians, saying an extension is not a crazy move and would fit the budget.
"Memphis is already in the budget. Because he is in the budget, keeping him is not crazy. It must be assessed within the overall budget, and we know what he delivers technically and in terms of image," he said, speaking to ESPN's Bola da Vez.
Memphis is out of contract at the end of June, when the World Cup takes place, and there have been no talks over a renewal. The current agreement includes targets that have left the club owing the forward.
Paz underlined a stricter spending policy, saying the plan is not to pay huge sums on transfer fees, salaries, signing bonuses or long contracts.
Asked about the transfer ban, he said investment will be reduced and tied to outgoing deals. "Very little. It will depend on sales. The club will need to sell between R$150 million and R$200 million. If it is more, it helps the budget, if it is less, it hurts."
Corinthians have taken a cautious approach this window. They advanced talks for midfielder Alisson but stepped back over the initial cost. Signings confirmed so far are centre-back Gabriel Paulista, midfielder Matheus Pereira, right-back Pedro Milans and forward Kaio César, who is contracted to Al Hilal, and an agreement is lined up with goalkeeper João Ricardo from Fortaleza.
