Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has outlined a plan targeting the 2026 World Cup with Gabriel Barbosa central to the project. According to Diario Do Peixe, the aim is to restore Gabigol to the Brazil squad to play alongside Neymar at the tournament.
Speaking at the striker’s official unveiling on Monday, Teixeira said Santos want Barbosa to deliver a strong first half of the year in the number nine shirt to press his international claims.
Gabigol struck a cautious tone, saying a return to the national team remains a dream and a career-long objective, but that his current moment does not align with that ambition.
He added that it is not impossible, yet his priority is to perform for Santos and help meet the club’s targets, suggesting he may need Santos more than the club needs him right now.
Barbosa has not played for Brazil since January 2022. He has featured in World Cup qualifiers, Copa América, friendlies and the Olympic Games, but has yet to appear at a World Cup.
