According to Sky Sport Germany, Wolfsburg failed in a January bid to sign Werder Bremen captain Marco Friedl.

The 27-year-old was identified as a key defensive target, with an offer worth more than €10 million tabled to strengthen their back line.

Friedl is said to have rejected the switch, opting to remain in Bremen to help the club through a difficult spell in their fight for Bundesliga survival. He has made 18 league appearances this season, scoring once.

Since then, Werder have parted company with head coach Horst Steffen after last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach. The club are now working to identify a successor.

Wolfsburg did add defensive cover on deadline day, signing Jonas Adjetey from FC Basel on a permanent deal and Jeanuël Belocian on loan from Bayer Leverkusen.
