Marco Gabbiadini 'not surprised' by Sunderland contract decision as long-term deal confirmed | OneFootball

Marco Gabbiadini says he is not surprised as Sunderland hand Romaine Mundle a long-term contract running to 2030.

The winger endured an injury-hit debut Premier League season last term and had surgery on a persistent hamstring issue earlier this year. He will hope to push for a regular role in Regis Le Bris’ first-team plans.

Director of football Florent Ghisolfi highlighted Mundle’s significant development since arriving, praising his pace, directness and creativity. He also noted that at 23 there remains scope to improve as the player commits his future to the club.

"I'm not surprised. I think he sort of fits the remit of some of the other players that we bring in, players who have progressed in a certain way. Mundle has done it at our club." The comments were made on BBC Radio Newcastle.

"I think there have been spells... Was it back to the start of the promotion season where he started off like a house on fire, didn't he? And you know, you thought, 'He's an exciting player'."

"So when the ball goes forward to the centre-forward, they need support and Mundle has the legs and he has the ambition to get towards the centre forward and be in a position where you end up nearer the goal rather than being out wide at the wing. It's difficult to score from the left wing or the right wing. It's much easier if you're within the boundaries of the 18-yard box."

Sunderland have also confirmed new deals for Wilson Isidor and Jenson Seelt to 2030, with Seelt joining Swansea City on a season-long loan. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs has extended to 2031.
