Marco Silva is set to take charge of Benfica, with an agreement in place on a two-year contract plus an option for a further year. He will succeed José Mourinho.
Record reports that he rejected a far more lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabia to prioritise negotiations with Benfica.
While in discussions with Rui Costa last week, Silva was also approached by a Premier League side of similar size to Fulham, but his focus remained on reaching an understanding with Benfica.
The Portuguese coach was quickly drawn to the chance to return to Portugal, be closer to family and compete regularly for trophies, including in European competition.
After five years at Fulham, the 47-year-old sought a more ambitious project, valuing sporting objectives over finance.
He is motivated by the task ahead, targeting the recovery of the national title while recognising Benfica’s demand to challenge at the highest level on all fronts, including the other domestic competitions.
