Monaco United, led by Marco Simone, chase a first-season treble against Marseille’s reserves in the Coupe Méditerranée final.
According to Nice-Matin, kick-off is at 18:00 at the Parc des Sports Pierre-Sauvaigo in Cagnes-sur-Mer. United have already sealed the District title and the Coupe Paul-Marenco, beating Villeneuve-Loubet 11-0 at Nice’s André-Donati ground on Sunday 10 May.
Simone, the former Monaco striker who scored 44 in 99 and won the league in his first season, launched the women’s project last summer with ambassadors Jérémy Ménez and Adil Rami. He says he founded the club because Monaco lacked a women’s flag while Marseille, Paris and Lyon have strong professional teams, and he wants a rapid climb towards the elite and Europe.
Built on a blend of youngsters and former second-tier professionals, Monaco United romped to the Départemental one crown, scoring 178 and conceding five.
They also knocked out Division three side Rousset, two tiers above them, on penalties in the quarter-finals, a display Simone regards as their reference once their playing philosophy clicked. His approach draws on lessons from Milan mentors Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello.
He expects a serious examination against the Regional one champions, reinforced by first-team players, and views the final as an ideal measure of where his team stand.
United usually play at the Stade Didier Deschamps in Cap-d’Ail, but the final is at Sauvaigo. Afterwards they turn to Regional one promotion play-offs against Étoile d’Aubune on 24 and 31 May.
