Barcelona are close to agreeing a deal to sign Marcus Rashford on loan with an option to buy as the striker eyes a new challenge away from Old Trafford.
Rashford fell out of favour at Manchester United last season after Ruben Amorim publicly criticised his work rate in training. He was put up for sale this summer after returning from a six-month loan at Aston Villa.
The Catalan giants Barcelona reported interest early in the window, and talks over a one-year loan are now in the final stages.
According to a report from The Athletic, both Rashford and the United hierarchy are keen on the move.
Despite their known financial struggles, the terms of the deal will see the Spanish outfit cover Rashford’s full pay packet, thought to be in excess of £325,000 per week. He is, however, expected to take a pay cut. Aston Villa paid three-quarters of his salary during his Birmingham stint.
Barcelona’s buy option is reportedly worth €35million (£30.3m).
Hansi Flick has held talks with the player, who will add sorely needed depth on the left flank, where he will compete with former Leeds winger Raphinha for minutes. He will also deputise 36-year-old striker Robert Lewandowski.
The Blaugrana enjoyed a stellar 2024-25 campaign, winning La Liga with a match to spare after clinching the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España.
Rashford, who last appeared for United in December, returned to form somewhat upon moving to Villa in January, scoring four goals in 17 appearances before his season was cut short by a hamstring injury.
He was named among a group of five United players excused from preseason training earlier this month to allow him time to find a move away from the club.
United have moved on quickly, though, as Standard Sport understands the club has agreed a £71million deal for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroon international is thought to be undergoing a medical this weekend.
Rashford joined United’s academy in 2005, going on to score 138 goals in 426 first-team appearances as he lifted the Europa League and two FA Cup trophies.
