Anthony Gordon arrived at Barcelona this summer as one of the club’s marquee signings, but his World Cup campaign has hit a small setback after he lost his place in England’s starting lineup.
The winger started England’s opening two group matches against Croatia and Ghana, with Thomas Tuchel trusting his pace and ability to attack space. However, Gordon found it difficult to make a decisive impact in either game, despite showing his usual work rate.
England’s 2-0 victory over Panama brought a change in approach. Gordon remained on the bench for the entire match, while Marcus Rashford was handed a starting role and delivered an encouraging performance as England secured qualification for the round of 32.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Rashford’s display gave England greater width and attacking rhythm, adding to the positive impression he had made after previously scoring off the bench against Croatia.
The comparison between the two England wingers has naturally grown following Tuchel’s selection decisions. Rashford appears to have won the early battle during the tournament, while Gordon is now waiting for another opportunity to respond.
From Barcelona’s perspective, there is little reason for concern. Gordon was signed because of qualities that extend beyond a handful of World Cup matches. His pressing, direct running, and intensity fit exactly what Hansi Flick wants from his wide forwards.
The World Cup is also a different environment from club football. International tournaments are often decided by short-term form and tactical matchups rather than long-term ability.
Meanwhile, Rashford’s performances may also leave some Barcelona supporters wondering whether the club could have found room to keep him after his successful loan spell.
However, his loan officially expired earlier this month after Barcelona chose not to activate their purchase option, with the England international returning to Manchester United.
For Gordon, the message is simple. The tournament is far from over, and one selection decision does not change Barcelona’s belief in him.
If anything, the competition should motivate the 25-year-old ahead of his first season under Flick. Barcelona invested heavily because they believe Gordon can become an important part of their project, and a difficult week with England is unlikely to change that assessment.
