The forward was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, and he was part of a quintet of players that were given extra time to find new clubs before the Red Devils returned for pre-season training.

However, Rashford reported to Carrington on time, but trained away from the first-team squad as he sought an exit strategy.

Multiple reports claimed that a switch to Catalonia was Rashford’s ‘dream’ move, and he has now had that dream recognised after Barca announced his capture on Monday.

The winger moves to Spain on an initial loan deal - where Barca are covering all of his wages - and an option for the Blaugrana to buy him.

On arrival, Rashford said: “It's official. Let’s do this. Visca el Barca!”

Since Amorim’s arrival in Manchester, Rashford has swiftly been eased out of the picture at United, and he admitted that it was “time for a new challenge” back in December.

He moved to Aston Villa on loan in January, playing 17 times in all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting six. Villa did not take up their £40million option to buy the forward.

Barca’s initial priority target for strengthening their left flank was Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, and they looked set to sign the Spaniard until he signed a new 10-year deal at the Basque club.

As such, they turned their attention to 27-year-old Rashford, who was not included in United’s recent squad to face Leeds in Stockholm for their first pre-season friendly of the campaign.
